Editing and Transition
Pacific Rim
Action Match Cut: (01:31-01:40) The army jets flew the the air in one scene and begin shooting at the alien monster and the cut transitions to another scene facing the front of the jets. You can see all the shots being fired and they bounce back out of the Kaiju, and seconds later the jet crashes into the alien, exploding. This technical element helps implement the fact that there were people attempting to fight back, and they looked like they had a good chance until the second cut came, where the Kaiju just finished off the jet by destroying it. It took two shots to display the beginning of the fight and how it ended. This scene allows the audience to feel fear and doom as the unknown specimen comes annihilating everything in its path. The jets were scene as small compared to the alien in the clip swell.
Cross cut: (01:46-01:48) The cross cut shows the civilians panicking and running for the lives while the military were sending soldiers out on jets to continue to battle with the Kaiju. This shows that both events were happening simultaneously while the chaos is occurring. The audience feel a sense of panic and urgency in this scene due to all the distress the civilians feel and the amount of jets being sent out to fight off the alien.
Insert Cut: (01:57-01:58) There was a zoom in shot of one of the cities, inserted before showing. the scientists there to collect data. It was placed there to emphasized the damage that has been done because of the Kaijus and how severe it really was. This allows the audience to have a picture of what is happening and a sense that they are in a dooms day era.
Long Take Transition: (02:24-02:26) The shot displays a large group of people, in low-key lighting, facing the dark sky, holding hands. the sky looks like a dark tarnished yellow, with grayish clouds, indicating their may be some type of apocalypse. The people seem to be in a heroic stance, and you can assume that they know they need to work together in order to save their world. The technical element helps to add to the tone of bravery in this shot. The long pause helps the audience understand the severity of the situation and how much tenacity it takes to fight for a better ending.
Parallel Editing Cut: (02:26-02:32) The cut shows civilians running in panic and distress from completely destroyed cities, the Kaiju letting out a big roar, and people protesting to save their cities. These events are happening at different times but, the parallel editing was used to make it look like everything was happening all at once. This causes the audience to feel a rising sense of alarm, being that the global issue has not been solved yet (and they look like they are running out of time and options), as well as terror, seeing that everything is still being destroyed and the Kaijus remain undefeated.
Jump Cut: (02:36-02:38) The clip shows the monsters that the humans made to fight back with the Kaijus. The technical element was used to show a different step in the building progression. aThis helps the audience see all different angles the technology was built from and they have a sense of hope from this clip that there may be a solution after all.
Ellipsis Transition: (02:46-02:58) The scene introduces a program they created and used modern technological additions to humans so that they were strong enough to fight. They skipped to the part where they had some difficulties in the operation and the omitted the portion where a solution was found, so they just introduced the solution. The technical element was meant to speed up the progress of the program and leave out the obvious things the audience would pick up by watching the transition. This allows the audience to still remain intrigued through the end of the intro, by cutting straight to the chase.
